This is my friend Brian Somrek. Brian and I worked together for 6 or 7 years driving cement trucks. Now he’s winning Bass Fishing tournaments. I am still driving the truck. Before Brian came to work for us he was fishing some small tournaments trying to get points. He left the Chicago area 2 years ago and went to Kentucky Lake. He came in second in a tournament about a month and a half ago. Yesterday Sunday May 10, 2009 Brian won the Stren Western Tournament held at Kentucky Lake.
Brian Somrek is living a dream! If you see this post Brian Congrats on the win. This was a big win for you. Keep it up! Come on back here and let’s hit some smaiiles at Rock Creek or on the river!

Last Weekend Fishing

I said I would post about fishing last weekend. Well I did go but got nothing. Didn’t even get any pictures. The bait shop said the walleye were hitting. I did everything right but still no luck. The spot I was at has produced well in the past. The river was very high and very fast. It was very dangerous wading. So that was just a quick note about that! There are many more day’s of fishing to come!
If you have noticed I have been working on the site. The images in the header are my younger brother on the left with a 17 1/2 LB. northern and me on the right with a 10 LB. walleye. Check the right side nav bar. We now have eBay listings for fishing tackle here at Tacklemaster Sports. I am also going to get eBay listings for boats. I am going to be doing a lot to the site over the next few weeks. I will be getting a forum up soon.
That’s it for now so I am out of here, back to work!

Fishing in the Wind - What You Need to Know
Posted on March 3, 2009

Fishing in the wind can be your friend! In most magazines and fishing shows you will see a bass boat or walleye rig flying across a glass smooth lake. We as fisherman know this is not true. Lot’s of the time you are fighting wind. Fishing in the wind can be great but you have to be safe!
Most fisherman avoid the wind and I am not advocating doing anything unsafe or something you are uncomfortable doing, fishing the windy side of a lake can be highly productive. The reason this can be so good is because as the wind pushes the waves across the lake they carry the warm surface water from one side of the lake to the other. As the wind pushes the waves across the lake they also carry plankton with them concentrating it on the windward side which attracts the baitfish. They eat plankton, they also attract the bigger fish. Waves crashing the shore on the windward side of a lake boil up the water, break up the light penetration and oxygenate the water on this side of the lake. If you consider these factors you will see why the windy side of a lake is irresistible to baitfish and gamefish alike.

Hey Everybody
I haven’t posted here in a while. I have a lot of irons in the fire right now. I added about 30 more pages of great outdoor products to tacklemaster Sports including a book section and I would like to call your attention to one in particular.
Here in the Chicago area we have had a few very nice days and I am really looking forward to going down to the river and getting some walleye. For those of you who live in the area or the Midwest may have heard of the Kankakee River. I live 10 minutes from it and it has a very nice population of walleye.
Have You Ever Seen Or Heard Of A Blue Walleye?

The Blue Walleye was common to lakes Erie and Ontario of the Great Lakes region of North America, including the inter-connecting Niagara River, but most especially to Lake Erie where it sometimes represented more than 50% of the commercial catch. The Blue Walleye was apparently gone by about 1965 through a combination of water pollution, over fishing and competition with the introduced rainbow smelt. The Blue Walleye is now considered extinct.

Walleye Fishing - What Tackle Do You Use?

What type of tackle do you Walleye Fisherman use? Please leave a comment below letting everyone know what Walleye fishing tackle you prefer.
Fishing for different species of fish requires different types of tackle. I am interested in seeing what type of gear you guys use for Walleye. If this goes over well I may do this for other species.
I myself prefer ultra-lite gear for Walleye. I use a 4 ft. 8 inch ultra - lite Ugly Stick and a Penn ultra - lite reel. I spool this with a good 6LB. mono. line. Some may prefer a heavier gear. I seem to lean towards lighter gear for everything. With this rod and reel I use I have pulled in a 28 inch Northern, a 37 inch Musky and many 15+ pound catfish some 6+ pound Stripers and many nice Walleye. My biggest Walleye with this rig is 6 1/2 pounds out of the Wisconsin River, near the Wisconsin Dells Dam. I also got a 6 1/2 LB. sturgeon at this same place on this tackle. Read more
